Outwit what deceives the eye!

How are our eyes made up? How are the blind able to read? How does our brain play tricks on us to recreate movement and depth in an image? What is light made of? The answers to these fascinating questions are found through learning about the anatomy of our eye and our five interactive experiments: braille reading, Benham’s Disk, creation of a thaumatrope, optical illusions and spectroscopes. Note: Your young scientists will be proud to take their thaumatrope home!

For 30 more minutes:

A sixth station has been added on shadow theatre, an ancient animation technique to create a movement effect!

Objectives at the elementary level:

  • Describe the various parts of the eye.
  • Understand how the eye detects colour (cones and rods).
  • Observe the change in forms, colours and textures in optical illusion images.
  • Create an optical illusion to take home.
  • Observe the behaviour of coloured light rays (primary colours of light).

Objectives at the elementary level:

  • Identify the main parts of the eye responsible for vision.
  • Describe the function of the main parts of the eye.
  • Define what a hereditary trait is (eye colour).
  • Describe the phenomena of dominant and recessive traits.
  • Understand how the brain interprets the light information sent through the eyes (cones, rods, reversed image, etc.).
  • Observe optical illusions that trick the brain.

Our needs

  • Access to an electrical outlet is required.
  • If there is little time between animation activities, it is strongly recommended to set them up in the same area
  • 5 teams must be created before the science animator arrives. (60 min.)
  • 6 teams must be created before the science animator arrives. (90 min.)

Additional charges

  • Travel costs (minimum $ 25) based on distance apply.
  • In 60-minute workshops, if there are more than 5 groups on schedule, the workshops will be spread over more than one day and the transportation costs will have to be adjusted accordingly.
  • In 90-minute workshops, if there are more than 4 groups on the schedule, the workshops will be spread over more than one day and the transportation costs will have to be adjusted accordingly.
