Sources of energy (British Columbia)

Energy in all its forms!

What do the wind, water, lemons and our muscles have in common? They all generate electricity! Young scientists will use these five sources of energy to make calculators work! The results of their calculation: an environmental cost index of each source of energy.  We can bet they won’t ever use electricity the same way!

For 30 more minutes:

Save energy by giving them more time to further explore the current use of different sources of energy.

Objectives at the elementary level:

  • Use different sources of energy in the classroom (mechanical, solar, wind, chemical and hydraulic).
  • Understand the impact of different sources of energy on the environment.
  • Explain the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy.
  • Be familiar with the ways of reducing energy consumption (LED lightbulb, devices with a timer function, renovations, etc.).
  • Understand the use and function of different electric circuits (series, parallel, closed and open).

Objectives at the secondary level:

  • Describe the different sources of energy (chemical, thermal, mechanical, hydraulic and solar).
  • Describe energy transformations taking place when electronic devices are operating.
  • Define the energy performance of an energy system.
  • Differentiate between renewable and non-renewable energy resources.
  • Describe and explain the impact of an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases.

Our needs

  • Access to electrical outlets is required.
  • If there is little time between animation activities, it is strongly recommended to set them up in the same area.
  • 5 teams must be created before the science animator arrives.

Additional charges

  • Travel costs (minimum $ 25) based on distance apply.
  • In 60-minute workshops, if there are more than 5 groups on schedule, the workshops will be spread over more than one day and the transportation costs will have to be adjusted accordingly.
  • In 90-minute workshops, if there are more than 4 groups on the schedule, the workshops will be spread over more than one day and the transportation costs will have to be adjusted accordingly.
  • Additional fees will be charged if there is a delay of more than 90 minutes between two workshops.
