Simple machines

Simple, but useful!

You’re not lazy, but intelligent! Throughout history, humans have always developed a number of devices to increase physical strength and make work easier. Come learn about the different types of simple machines (lever, inclined plane, pulley, winch, screw, and wedge). Build levers and compare their effectiveness (using a dynamometer) in lifting a 1-kg load as part of an actual scientific study. Your little Newton must then decide what leverage position wins the fight against gravity.

For 30 more minutes:

Find out which simple machine is the most effective in lifting a 1-kg mass? The lever or pulley? To find out the answer, we will build different possible pulley combinations and compare our results with those of the lever. Time to test your assumptions!

Objectives at the elementary level:

  • Identify and recognize the use of simple machines (lever, inclined plane, screw, pulley, winch and wheel).
  • Describe the use of simple machines (variation of the effort).
  • Describe the effect of a force on a structure.
  • Use levers and pulleys to lift a load.
  • Use measurement instruments (dynamometer).

Our needs

  • 6 teams must be created before the science animator arrives.

Additional charges

  • Travel costs (minimum $ 25) based on distance apply.
  • In 60-minute workshops, if there are more than 5 groups on schedule, the workshops will be spread over more than one day and the transportation costs will have to be adjusted accordingly.
  • In 90-minute workshops, if there are more than 4 groups on the schedule, the workshops will be spread over more than one day and the transportation costs will have to be adjusted accordingly.
  • Additional fees will be charged if there is a delay of more than 90 minutes between two workshops.
