Generate power using a bike!

Have you seen the video of the Olympic cyclist who powers his toaster by pedaling a bike? Unbelievable, but true! Can you perform such a task? By activating a dynamo, young electricians must power a fan, neon light and motor! The concept of converting mechanical energy into electrical energy, i.e. the production of electrons, is no longer a secret for young electricians. Quiet, we’re busy pedaling!

For 30 more minutes:

Spend the time helping to build a scale model of a city and make electricity to power the streetlights and traffic lights! Everyone will be part of this great project!

Objectives at the elementary level:

  • Understand what electricity is.
  • Describe energy transformations from one of its form into another (e.g. hydraulic energy into electric energy).
  • Generate electric current with a dynamo (generator).
  • Recognize the effects of electromagnetism in electricity.
  • Operate an engine, a fan and neon light with no electrical outlet.
  • Understand the use and function of different electric circuits (series, parallel, closed and open).
  • Be able to read plans with symbols.

Objectives at the secondary level:

  • Identify the forms of energy involved during a transformation of energy.
  • Generate electric current using a dynamo to operate an engine, fan and neon light.
  • Describe the function of different elements of an electric circuit.
  • Describe the two types of connections in electric circuits (series and parallel).
  • Differentiate between alternating and direct current.
  • Explain the current distribution in different components of an electric circuit.
  • Describe the magnetic field produced by a solenoid.

Our needs

  • Six teams must be created before the science animator arrives.

Additional charges

  • Travel costs (minimum $ 25) based on distance apply.
  • Additional fees will be charged if there is a delay of more than 90 minutes between two workshops.
  • In 60-minute workshops, if there are more than 5 groups on schedule, the workshops will be spread over more than one day and the transportation costs will have to be adjusted accordingly.
  • In 90-minute workshops, if there are more than 4 groups on the schedule, the workshops will be spread over more than one day and the transportation costs will have to be adjusted accordingly.
