Turing Tumble®

The Logic Challenge!

How does a computer make decisions? How can it perform calculations, solve problems, or run a program?

Using the Turing Tumble® game, students discover the fundamental principles of programming and how computers work… without screens or electricity! By building real mechanical circuits powered by marbles, they develop their logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and understanding of computer science concepts such as algorithms, binary numbers, and logic gates.

Through a series of progressively challenging activities, students observe, experiment, test their ideas, and correct their mistakes in order to find the best solution. A hands-on, engaging, and stimulating way to discover the basics of computer science while developing persistence, creativity, and critical thinking.

What’s Included:

  • Available as in-school workshops: a minimum of 2 workshops of 60, 75, or 90 minutes.
  • After-school programs: 60-minute workshops available in 6-, 8-, or 10-week sessions.

Objectives at the elementary level:

  • Develop logical thinking by analysing and solving programming challenges.
  • Understand that an algorithm is a sequence of instructions used to solve a problem.
  • Experiment with different strategies to test, modify, and improve a solution.
  • Recognize that computers make decisions by following logical rules.
  • Collaborate with peers to design, test, and explain a solution.
  • Develop persistence, critical thinking, and creativity when faced with increasingly complex challenges.

Objectives at the secondary level:

  • Design and optimize algorithms to solve complex problems.
  • Understand the role of logic gates, binary numbers, and decision-making mechanisms used in computers.
  • Develop a problem-solving process based on observation, analysis, testing, and refinement.
  • Use computational thinking to plan, test, and improve a solution.
  • Explain how a logical system works using appropriate scientific and technological vocabulary.
  • Collaborate effectively to take on challenges involving programming, logic, and reasoning.

Our needs

  • If there is limited time between workshops, we strongly recommend having all workshops in the same room.
  • Access to an interactive whiteboard or digital projector is required in the room where the workshops will take place.
  • Five teams must be formed before the facilitator arrives.

Important information

  • A minimum of two in-school groups is required.
  • Profaqua provides an Apple TV for your interactive whiteboard.

Additional charges

  • Travel fees (minimum $25) apply depending on the distance.
  • For 60-minute workshops, if more than five groups are scheduled, the workshops will be spread over more than one day and the travel fees will be adjusted accordingly.
  • For 75-minute in-school workshops, if more than four groups are scheduled, the workshops will be spread over more than one day and the travel fees will be adjusted accordingly.
  • For 90-minute in-school workshops, if more than three groups are scheduled, the workshops will be spread over more than one day and the travel fees will be adjusted accordingly.
  • A $60 fee will be charged if there is a delay of more than 90 minutes between two workshops.
