Let\u2019s take a virtual walk into the forest. We will determine the age of several trees and plants (aspen, balsam fir, sequoia and bamboo) by counting their growth rings. We will also study their modes of reproduction by handling the cones of the balsam fir and discussing bamboo rhizomes. We will also experiment on the effects of bark wounds on sap flow and look at examples of tree diseases. A great workshop for allowing new knowledge to take root!<\/p>\n<p><strong>For 30 more minutes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Become seeds experts, thanks to our extensive seed collection!<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>Objectives at the elementary level:<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Describe the different between coniferous trees and leafed trees and present the characteristics of certain trees.<\/li>\n<li>Describe certain defense mechanisms that trees have developed to promote their growth.<\/li>\n<li>Explain the important of water, light, mineral salts and carbon dioxide for plants.<\/li>\n<li>Describe the effects of urbanization and land development on trees and plants.<\/li>\n<li>Study the growth of trees by cutting cross-sections of a trunk.<\/li>\n<li>Understand how trees reproduce.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong><u>Objectives at the secondary level:<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Describe the physical adaptations that increase a plant\u2019s chances of survival.<\/li>\n<li>Describe the behavioural adaptations that increase a plant\u2019s chances of survival.<\/li>\n<li>Describe the impact of urbanization and land development on trees and plants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The secrets of the forest If trees have rings, it\u2019s not because they\u2019re tired.
